Options
There are a variety of options for the non-surgical treatment of common back conditions, including:
- Physical therapy - Physical therapy strengthens the muscles of the back and core and improves posture, reducing the amount of weight the spine must bear. In addition, exercise increases the flow of blood and nutrients to the spine, promoting healing.
- Chiropractic treatment - A chiropractor can help by improving posture and increasing the flow of blood to the spine, much like physical therapy.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) - Often, relieving inflammation is enough to permanently reduce symptoms.
- Epidural steroid injections -
Your treatment plan may include one or more of these depending on your particular situation; only a doctor can identify the best course of action for you.
When to Seek Surgery
There are certain situations where the first choice of treatment is surgery. If symptoms are very severe, surgery may be immediately necessary. In addition, if the condition is causing progressing symptoms in the cervical spine, prompt surgery may be called for. If neither of these conditions are met, non-surgical treatments will usually be used first. This helps to reduce the risk of side effects and minimizes the amount of downtime patients face.
When surgery is necessary, laser back surgery is the best option for most conditions, such as problems with the discs or vertebrae. Open back surgery is still used for certain serious conditions, though, such as spinal tumors and kyphosis.
