Surgical treatment will cost various amounts depending on:
- How long the surgery takes
- How extensive the surgery is, i.e. how many parts of the spine are operated on
- Whether or not a hospital stay is involved
- How long the patient is on medication after the surgery
- How long physical therapy is necessary after the operation
Types of Surgery
Traditional, open spine surgery is very resource heavy, requiring lengthy surgeries which often include bone grafts and the addition of hardware, and a long hospital stay and longer at-home recovery time.
Fortunately, laser spine surgery is also available as a spinal stenosis operation for most forms of stenosis, including herniated discs, bone spurs, and more. This type of surgery is much less resource-intensive: it is performed in an outpatient setting, the procedure is shorter and simpler, and the recovery time is much shorter. As a result, this type of surgery is often less expensive.
Insurance
Most people's insurance covers both types of spinal stenosis operation. This leaves patients only to pay the deductible. Depending on the insurance coverage, this may be several hundred or several thousand dollars. If you have a health savings account, it will probably be enough to cover the deductible; it not, you may inquire with your physician about whether a payment plan is available for your deductible.
