How Treatable is Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is a very common spine condition that can cause herniated discs and bulging discs. This condition can cause pain and other symptoms, but symptoms can be relieved through either surgical or non-surgical methods in the majority of cases.

Understanding Degenerative Disc Disease

Intervertebral discs lie between each of the vertebrae in the spine. They function to provide structure, facilitate flexibility, and absorb the shock of everyday activities like walking.

With age and wear, the discs can begin to lose their fluid content and their structure, becoming thinner and more fragile. This can lead the discs to rupture (herniated disc) or become misshapen (bulging disc). One or more of the spine's discs may be affected. This condition is known as degenerative disc disease.

Sometimes, people with spinal disc problems never experience any symptoms; many people have bulging or herniated discs and are never even aware of it. Other people do experience significant symptoms, including pain, numbness, or muscle weakness.

Degenerative Dics Disease is Treatable

Degenerative disc disease can be painful, and the process of recovering can feel frustrating for many patients. The good news is that the condition is very treatable. The majority of patients respond well to treatment, and surgery is not usually necessary.

Some of the most effective treatments for spinal disc conditions include:

  • Physical therapy - Strengthens the spine and promotes mobility, thus improving alignment and reducing inflammation. Physical therapy is often a cornerstone of treatment.
  • NSAIDs - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Aleve and Advil can relieve inflammation. Be sure to talk to your doctor before taking NSAIDs for longer than a few days.
  • Steroid injections - Injecting a steroid medication directly into the epidural space of the spine greatly reduces inflammation.
  • Chiropractic treatment - When used in conjunction with medical treatment, many patients experience relief with chiropractic treatment.
  • Minimally invasive spine surgery - When conservative treatment is ineffective, the condition can be treated with a procedure such as laser spine surgery.
  • Open spine surgery - Open spine surgery is the traditional treatment for damaged discs, and may still be appropriate in certain cases.
  • Weight loss - Losing weight reduces the amount of pressure on the spine. Obese people can often experience a reduction in symptoms by losing as little as 10% of their body weight.
  • Smoking cessation - Smoking contributes to inflammation and inhibits healing, so smoking cessation is recommended.
