Conditions in the cervical spine, or the neck, have the potential to be more severe than any other area of the spine. The spinal cord is home to millions of nerves that send signals to and from every part of the body; as the spine goes down, the nerves branch off, so that the cervical spine has many nerves, going to all parts of the body, while the lowest part of the spine only has nerves going to the pelvis and legs. Cervical spine conditions can cause symptoms almost anywhere in the body. In extreme cases, symptoms may be progressive and eventually lead to severe issues like paralysis.

A bulging disc occurs when one of the vertebral discs becomes misshapen, potentially pressing against the nerves in the spine. Out of all spine conditions, bulging discs are one of the most common - in fact, many people have asymptomatic bulging discs that they don't know about until it's revealed during a medical scan. On the other hand, some people with bulging discs experience symptoms that affect their quality of life, and even their overall health in rare cases.

Insurance is designed to make getting care that would be expensive out-of-pocket affordable. This is the case with laser back surgery: due to the high cost of the materials and labor needed for this procedure, it is tough to afford without insurance, but with insurance just about every patient who needs it can receive laser back surgery.

What Surgery Entails

Because laser spine operations are on the cutting-edge of the treatment of spine conditions, patients sometimes assume that they will be unaffordable compared to traditional spine surgery. In fact, laser spine surgery sometimes incurs lower overall costs than traditional surgery, because of the fact that many of the associated costs (medication, hospital stay, follow-up appointments) are lower.

If you undergo any surgery, no matter how minor, you are likely to miss at least a small amount of work. With laser back surgery, the recovery time is only about a quarter as long as that of traditional back surgery. However, patients will still need to miss some work.

Timeline

Most patients with desk jobs can expect to take about a week off of work after having laser spine surgery. As long as no complications are experienced, that is enough time for patients to regain their mobility and return to work pain-free.

The spine is one of the most delicate and essential parts of the body. Almost all communication between the brain and the rest of the body passes through the spinal cord, which means that spinal injuries, conditions, or diseases can cause symptoms ranging from pain to muscle weakness to numbness, and severe problems like paralysis and death, depending on the nature and severity of the condition.

It is an unfortunate fact that just about anyone who is undergoing surgery must think about the possible financial impact of the medical care they need. The good news is that, with insurance, the majority of people are able to get the appropriate treatment. That is true of bulging disc surgery, one of the most common spine surgeries.

No one wants to get spine surgery if they can avoid it; the prospect of going under the knife is scary to many, never mind the inconveniences involved in recovering from spine surgery. However, surgery is necessary to make a full recovery in some cases. If you do need spine surgery, the best thing you can do is to educate about your condition, spine surgery, and spine surgeons.

Just about every field of surgery has been transformed by minimally invasive procedures. With highly detailed and accurate small cameras, there is often no need to open up whole joints or body cavities; instead, a camera and tools can be inserted through small incisions. Fields ranging from orthopedic surgery to gastric surgery have enjoyed these technological advances. Spine surgery has also been transformed by minimally invasive procedures, especially laser spine surgery.
