Causes
Anyone can develop a herniated disc, regardless of whether or not the condition has an obvious cause or whether or not they have risk factors. However, the following groups are more likely to develop a cervical spine disc herniation:
- Obesity
- Smoking
- A physically active job that involves lifting
- Age - the discs lose fluid and become more prone to injury with age
For these groups, precautionary measures like proper lifting technique are even more important than usual.
Symptoms
Cervical spine disc herniations can cause a variety of symptoms, manifesting all over the body. Examples include:
- Pain in the shoulders or neck
- Pain in the arms or legs
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or legs
- Muscle weakness in the arms or legs
- Incontinence
Treatment & Prognosis
Symptoms are considered more serious if they get progressively worse. Because the cervical spine contains so many nerves, in rare cases an untreated cervical disc herniation can eventually lead to paralysis. For that reason, progressive symptoms are treated more aggressively, with surgery considered sooner.
In most cases, there is no need to resort to a spine operation in the treatment of a cervical disc herniation. Doctors can take many steps to alleviate symptoms by reducing inflammation and promoting proper alignment of the spine. Examples of such treatments include physical therapy and medication. In the long run, lifestyle changes can prevent future flare-ups.
