What You Should Do About The Bulging Disc in Your Back

Bulging discs are a common back problem, especially among older people. Many people with bulging discs never have symptoms at all, but some people do experience symptoms, in which case the disc should be treated. Below, we will take a look at the treatment options for a bulging disc.

Conservative Treatment Options

The majority of bulging discs can be treated non-surgically, by using conservative methods that improve spinal alignment and reduce inflammation. These methods are usually the first course of treatment, unless symptoms are very severe or progress.

Conservative treatment options include:

  • Physical therapy - Physical therapy helps align the spine and strengthen the muscles that support the spine. When performed as directed, physical therapy can provide long-lasting relief. It also equips patients with exercises and stretches that can be used at home to prevent flare-ups long after the formal sessions have ended.
  • Weight loss - Carrying excess weight places stress on the spine and other joints throughout the body. Weight loss will not cure a bulging disc, but it can reduce symptoms because less stress is placed on the spine. For obese individuals, losing as little as 10% of one's body weight can make a difference.
  • Medication - Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like Aleve and Advil are commonly used to help patients manage pain and reduce inflammation. Long-term use of over-the-counter medications should not be started without the recommendation and supervision of a doctor.
  • Chiropractic treatment - In conjunction with medical care, some patients report good results from chiropractic treatment.
  • Steroid injections - A minimally invasive procedure in which a small needle is used to inject steroid medication into the affected area. Steroids, which mimic substances naturally found in the body, have powerful anti-inflammatory effects.

Surgical Treatment

In cases where conservative treatments are ineffective or not appropriate, surgery may be considered. Most bulging discs can be treated with minimally invasive surgery, without needing to resort to traditional, open spine surgery.

During laser spine surgery, the doctor makes only a couple of small incisions near the bulging disc. Through one incision, a camera is inserting, allowing the doctor to see the area. Through the other incision, a laser probe is inserted. The probe is used to dissolve the bulging portion of the disc, thus relieving the issue without invasive surgery.

Laser spine surgery require no hospital stay or general anesthesia. In addition, the downtime is short and the risks are small.
