How Safe is Endoscopic Back Surgery?

When considering the options to treat chronic and debilitating back pain, it is necessary to compare the risks associated with a specific procedure. Where open back surgery consists of numerous risks, endoscopic surgery is much safer.

Endoscopic surgery, can be performed under local anesthesia. The use of a local anesthesia in the area of the incision is much safer that having the patient “go under” and be completely unconscious.

A small tube that contains all of the surgical tools, as well as a small camera, is inserted into the incision. The surgeon is then able to identify and correct the damaged disc in the patient’s spine by using the monitor in the operating room. The incision that is made is so small that only a few stitches are necessary after the procedure. Stiches are self absorbing and do not usually need to be removed.

Patients are able to go home the same day as the procedure. The recovery time is minimal compared to that of an open back surgery and the patient is typically fully recovered in a few short weeks.

Blood loss is also less with with endoscopic back surgery as no back muscles are usually cut.
