If you have a bulging or herniated disc, it may produce symptoms of pain, muscle weakness, and numbness that do not respond to non-surgical methods. In such cases, disc decompression surgery may be needed. Below, we'll take a look at the basics of this procedure, as well as what to expect in terms of recovery time.
About Damaged Discs
The intervertebral discs are composed of a firmer outer portion and a gel-like inner portion. If damage occurs to the disc, it can press up against the spinal cord or nerve roots. A herniated disc occurs when the outer portion ruptures and allows the inner portion to come out, while a bulging disc is when the disc is misshapen but still intact.
When Surgery is Used
The vast majority of bulging and herniated discs can be treated without resorting to surgery. In most cases, methods that improve spinal alignment and relieve inflammation are sufficient to provide long-lasting relief. On the other hand, sometimes symptoms are severe, get worse, or persist even after conservative treatment. That is when disc decompression surgery may be considered.
Traditional vs. Minimally Invasive Surgery
For decades, open back surgery was the only option for disc decompression surgery. During this procedure, the doctor opens up the spine. The surgery may consist of removing the out of place portion of the disc, removing part of the bone to relieve pressure on the disc, and fusing two of the vertebrae together to prevent friction and improve stability.
Although effective, open back surgery is an extremely invasive procedure. Fortunately, minimally invasive laser spine surgery is now available. During laser spine surgery, the doctor makes only a couple of small incisions. A laser probe is inserted into the spine through one of the incisions and is used to dissolve the bulging or herniated portion of the disc.
Recovery Time
The recovery time with laser spine surgery is much shorter than that with open back surgery. Most patients can return home within a week, and make a full recovery in 6-8 weeks. Open back surgery patients typically face a recovery time several times the length of laser spine surgery patients.
