How Can I Get Spine Pain Relief

Spine pain can have a drastic effect on your day to day life, causing stress, decreased productivity, and constant discomfort. However, there are many effective forms of treatment for this common condition. Properly addressed, symptoms can be relieved effectively and permanently.

Most back pain results from damage to the muscles of the back; rest and physical therapy are effective at treating these issues. Chronic back pain, in contrast, is usually caused by problems in the bones or discs of the spine. Herniated discs, arthritis, and spinal stenosis can all cause chronic back pain.

Treatments

Depending on the cause and severity of your spine pain, a variety of treatments may be used. In general, less invasive treatments will be used first; only when these fail will physicians recommend more invasive procedures. Spine pain treatments include:

  • Rest. This can help relieve inflammation and give muscles time to heal.
  • Weight loss. If you are obese, losing 10% of your body weight can relieve symptoms by reducing the amount of weight borne by the spine.
  • Physical therapy and exercise. Physical therapy can help strengthen the core muscles and improve posture, again reducing the load the spine bears.
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These medications can relieve symptoms by reducing inflammation.
  • Epidural steroid injections. These shots, injected into the spinal membrane, can also reduce inflammation.
  • Laser spine surgery. This type of surgery uses minimally invasive techniques such as endoscopic surgery to treat the root cause of the problem with minimal downtime.
  • Open spine surgery. This is a more major procedure, which requires a hospital stay and considerable downtime; it is best suited to more severe conditions which cannot be addressed otherwise.

Only your physician recommend the right treatment for you. However, some people who have been told that they are not a candidate for open spine surgery may still be eligible to undergo laser spine surgery.
