When back pain becomes extreme, patients will begin to consider extreme measures. Traditional open back surgery involves literally "going under the knife” with a scalpel. The back is opened up and surgeons must move muscle aside in order to get to the problem area (such as a herniated disc) and repair the damage.
Instead, laser spine surgery can quickly alleviate pain for a variety of spine afflictions. With a procedure called "ablation," the laser is used to decrease the size of affected vertebral discs and therefore ease pain and pressure on nerves. Laser spine surgery can also be used for "laminotomy," whereby bulging discs can be reduced in size or bone spurs or growths can be removed, relieving pressure and pain in the spine.
Laser spine surgery can promise the same relief as open spine surgery, but with fewer complications, faster healing time, and less pain. Because a laser takes the place of the scalpel in laser spine surgery, bleeding and damage to surrounding tissue is minimal.
