Are There Cervical Disc Bulge Exercises

Disc bulges are quite common, with many people developing at least one bulging disc throughout their lives. As you age, the chance that you will develop a disc bulge is higher. The majority of the time, the symptoms of a disc bulge will resolve within several weeks with the use of methods like physical therapy. If you have a bulging disc in the neck, doing cervical disc bulge exercises can help to manage your symptoms directly after their onset, and prevent future flare-ups in the long term.

Any exercise program intended to treat a medical condition should only be done with the advice of your doctor. Based on your particular symptoms, the location of the disc bulge, and any physical limitations, your doctor or physical therapist can recommended exercises that are right for you.

In addition, it's important to perform all cervical disc bulge exercises with a mind to safety. All exercises should be performed on both sides, even if you only have symptoms on one side. When stretching, never force a stretch or bounce into a stretch. Although you should feel a light stretch or that your muscles are being used during exercises, you should stop immediately if you feel pain. With that in mind, the following cervical disc bulge exercises are often effective at relieving and preventing symptoms:
  • Bring your chin to your chest; hold for 10-15 seconds
  • Tilt your head back, so you're looking at the ceiling; hold for 10-15 seconds
  • Rotate your head from side to side several times
  • Tilt your head to each side, trying to touch your ear to your shoulder; hold for 10-15 seconds

The goal of these exercises is to take your neck through its full range of motion. They should be performed every day, several times a day, for best results. You can do these exercises while sitting at your desk at work, on the train during your daily commute, or any other time throughout the day when you have a few minutes to spare.
