Can I Fix a Bulging Disc

A bulging disc occurs when one of the vertebral discs becomes misshapen, potentially pressing against the nerves in the spine. Out of all spine conditions, bulging discs are one of the most common - in fact, many people have asymptomatic bulging discs that they don't know about until it's revealed during a medical scan. On the other hand, some people with bulging discs experience symptoms that affect their quality of life, and even their overall health in rare cases.

Surgical Treatment

It's relatively uncommon for a bulging disc to need surgical treatment. Most cases respond well to the types of conservative treatment outlined below. If symptoms are severe and progressive, or if you don't respond to conservative treatments, then surgery may be considered as a treatment option. Surgery addresses the disc itself, removing the portion that "bulges."

There is minimally invasive surgery available for the treatment of a bulging disc. For many patients, the best type of surgery is laser spine surgery, a procedure which allows patients to get effective treatment for their herniated disc without having to face an invasive surgery and a long recovery time.

Conservative Treatments

While surgery actually removes the bulging portion of the disc, symptoms can often be relieved while keeping the disc totally intact. Inflammation and misalignment of the spine can contribute heavily to symptoms, so conservative treatments are aimed at addressing those issues. Options include:
  • Limited rest, as directed by the physician
  • Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Chiropractic treatment
Although the exact course of bulging disc treatment varies from patient to patient, virtually all people with bulging discs are able to make a full recovery when they have access to effective treatments and a physician with good judgment.
