When Can I Return To Work After Back Surgery

The recovery period for back surgery is highly dependent on the type of surgery performed. There are two major divisions of back surgery: traditional open back surgery, and laser spine surgery. While traditional surgery is still the only options for certain rare and serious conditions, the majority of spine conditions can be treated using laser spine surgery. This has numerous advantages, but one of the biggest advantages has to do with the length and ease of the recovery period.

Traditional Back Surgery

During traditional spine surgery, the physician creates a large incision along the appropriate part of the spine using a scalpel. Then, excess material is removed using a scalpel. In order to gain access to the discs and vertebrae or to relieve pressure on the spinal cord, it's often necessary to remove small amounts of vertebral bone. To stabilize the spine after this invasive procedure, it's not unusual for vertebral fusion to be performed.

Traditional spine surgery is a major procedure, and patients are often away from work for at least 6 weeks. It can take several months for patients to make a full recovery.

Laser Spine Surgery

Instead of creating a large incision along the spine, laser spine surgeons insert a small camera into the spine to allow them to see the area being treated. Then, a small laser is inserted through another incision. Instead of removing excess material using a scalpel, the laser is used to dissolve any disc or bone tissue pressing against the spine. Small tools can also be inserted if necessary.

This procedure is much less invasive than traditional surgery. Most patients return to work in a week, and make a full recovery in about 6 weeks.
