Surgery Options for a Bulging Disc

A bulging disc occurs when one of the spine's intervertebral discs loses its shape, due to repetitive damage or trauma. The misshapen disc then runs the risk of pressing against the nerve roots or spinal cord; if this occurs, symptoms may appear. Bulging discs are one of the most common spine conditions, and they are highly treatable. Although most discs respond well to non-surgical treatments, there are a couple of surgery options for a bulging disc in cases where conservative treatments are ineffective.

Traditional Spine Surgery

For many years, the only available option for treating bulging discs was using open spine surgery. This type of surgery is effective, but highly invasive. During traditional spine surgery, the doctor makes a large incision along the spine in order to access the disc. The bulging portion of the disc is then manually removed, relieving symptoms. In some cases, the doctor may perform a laminectomy, in which a small amount of the vertebrae is removed, in order to relieve pressure. Major interventions to stabilize the spine, such as vertebral fusion, may then be needed.

Laser Spine Surgery

Laser spine surgery represents a minimally invasive alternative to traditional spine surgery. In most bulging disc cases, laser surgery is the preferable course of action. Instead of making a large incision, the spine is accessed by inserting a camera and laser probe. The laser is then used to dissolve the bulging portion of the disc. Patients return home the same day, and enjoy a shorter recovery time.

Exploring Your Options

The only way to find out what the best treatment is for your condition is, is to talk to your doctor about your surgery options for a bulging disc. Your doctor will evaluate whether or not you need surgery, and which type of surgery is best for you, based on diagnostic testing and an analysis of your symptoms and how you have responded to past treatments.
