Which Sciatica Stretches Are Best For Relieving Pain?

Meta description: Looking for stretches to relieve sciatica pain? This article will explain...

Sciatica is one of the most common lower back problems in the nation. The condition, which can be caused by a wide range of underlying problems, responds well to at-home stretches that can be used to ease symptoms and prevent flare-ups. Below, we will take a look at some effective sciatica stretches for pain relief.

Stretching Safely

When you use sciatica stretches for pain relief, it is important to be safe about how you stretch. Always adhere to these safety guidelines:

  • Talk to your doctor before starting a course of exercise or stretching that is designed to relieve a medical condition
  • Always perform stretches on both sides, even if you only have symptoms on one side
  • Never force or bounce yourself into a stretch
  • You should feel a mild stretch - never pain. If it hurts, don't do it
  • Perform stretches once or twice daily for best results, even if you are not currently having a flare-up

Sciatica Stretches for Pain Relief

The following stretches, when performed regularly, may ease symptoms of sciatica:

  • Knee to chest - Lay on your back with your hands at your side and both legs down. Bend your right knee, then place your hands over your right knee and gently pull it towards your chest. Hold for 15-30 seconds and repeat on both sides.
  • Simple twist - Sit on the ground in a cross legged position. Lift your right leg and place your right foot beside your left knee, so that your right knee points to the ceiling. Place your left elbow on your right knee, and turn to the right side. Hold for 15-30 seconds, and repeat on both sides.
  • Standing pike - Bend at the waist and reach your hands towards your toes. If you are able to, grab your toes or calves and pull yourself closer to your legs. Hold for 30 seconds, then slowly roll your spine to a standing position.

Sciatica stretches for pain relief should be used in conjunction with medical treatments for sciatica, such as medication or physical therapy. Only a doctor can tell you which treatment is best for your condition.
