Laser Back Surgery Results

There are two main ways to gauge the results of a surgery: how effective the surgery is at treating the problem, and what the risk of complications is. Laser back surgery excels in both of these regards. The procedure is effective at relieving pain and other symptoms associated with a variety of back problems, while also bringing patients a reduced risk of certain side effects.

Effectiveness

Laser spine surgery is highly precise and effective. During this procedure, a laser is precisely calibrated to remove the appropriate amount of disc or vertebral tissue, thus relieving pressure on the spine. The vast majority of patients find that their back pain is relieved with this procedure. Indeed, most patients return home the same day of the surgery without pain.

Complications

The overall risk of side effects from laser spine surgery is quite small. In addition, the recovery period is shorter than that of traditional spine surgery. The procedure carries a lower risk of certain complications associated with traditional spine surgery, including:

• Infection - Because the incision is smaller and there is no hospital stay, there is less opportunity for infection
  
• Bleeding - The wound is only a fraction of the size of that used in traditional back surgery, so there is a lower risk of bleeding
  
• Clotting - Patients have better mobility following the surgery, which reduces the risk of clotting
  
• Constipation - Improved mobility also makes it less likely that patients will experience constipation after surgery
  

Although the risk of complications is low, no surgery is completely without risk or downtime, and that should be avoided as much as possible. For that reason, laser back surgery will only be recommended in cases where non-surgical options have been exhausted or are not available.
