How Long Will My Pain Last After Back Surgery

It's a bit of a conundrum that, while back surgery is generally prescribed as a treatment for back pain, traditional spine surgery increases pain in the short-term. Fortunately, there are minimally invasive forms of back surgery available for most routine spine conditions, which make the recovery period quicker and more comfortable. Whereas traditional spine surgery required doctors to make a large incision and sometimes to perform extreme procedures such as spinal fusion, laser spine surgery involves only one or two small incisions, through which a camera and a laser are inserted.

What to Expect During Recovery

The exact course of recovery will depend on whether you get laser spine surgery or traditional spine surgery. For traditional spine surgery, you will have a hospital stay of about a week, and several weeks where movement is limited and pain is at a relatively high level, though it can usually be managed with medication. Slowly, with physical therapy and the passage of time, pain fades and you reach a level of well-being far greater than what you had before the surgery.

With laser spine surgery, there is no need for a hospital stay. Instead of feeling pain as they heal from a large wound and an invasive surgery, patients walk away from the office pain-free. Movement is restricted for several weeks, but the recovery period should not be uncomfortable. What's more, patients recover in only a fraction of the time it takes to recover from traditional spine surgery.

While traditional spine surgery has a relatively grueling recovery period, it is still well worth it for instances where it's the only treatment option. On the other hand, conditions like herniated discs and bone spurs can now be treated without resorting to such invasive measures.
