During laser spine surgery, a small camera is inserted through an incision about the width of a pencil. Then, a probe is inserted through another small incision. The probe is used to apply laser energy to the disc, dissolving a small portion. The disc regains its normal shape.
With this type of surgery, the recovery period is only a fraction of the length - about 1/4 of the time. There is not need for a hospital stay, and patients feel better as soon as the surgery takes place. Some side effects are less likely to occur, and the overall outcomes are better.
