Bulging Disc Surgery

Bulging discs are one of the most common spine conditions around, and they are also among the most mild. A bulging disc occurs when a disc flattens out, taking up more space than it should. Although some people don't experience any symptoms, and go through life unaware that they have a spine condition, when the disc presses against the nerve roots or the spinal cord, the symptoms can be severe. Bulging discs are especially common in older people, obese people, and pregnant women.

Often, bulging discs can be treated using non-surgical procedures such as chiropractic care, physical therapy, epidural steroid injections, and medications; if symptoms don't resolve, it's time to consider surgery as a treatment option.

Laser Surgery

When a bulging disc doesn't respond to conservative treatments, the best way to treat it is with laser spine surgery. During this procedure, an endoscopic camera is used to see the spine, and a laser is used to dissolve or remove the portion of the disc that is causing symptoms; this procedure is called a discectomy.

Laser spine surgery is one of the most important advances that has occurred in the surgical treatment of routine spine conditions. Whereas conditions like bulging discs previously had to be treated by creating a large wound on the spine and removing large portions of disc, the procedure is now performed with just two small incisions about the size of a needle. This procedure has the following advantages:
  • No hospital stay
  • Reduced chance of needing to remove bone or add hardware
  • More comfortable recovery
  • Much shorter recovery (about 1/4 the time)
  • Reduced risk of infection, clotting, and bleeding

While not all spine conditions can be treated with laser surgery, bulging discs almost always can be. To schedule an appointment about treatment for your bulging disc or other spine condition, please call the Datta Endoscopic Back Surgery and Pain Center at
